Secrets of Locations' Goal Getters

For nearly two decades, Locations sales coaches have hosted goal board workshops to help our agents to visualize (and manifest!) their personal and professional goals for the year ahead. Creating a yearly goal board has become an integral part of our business-planning process, and our agents credit this key motivational exercise with keeping them on track throughout the year.

If it’s late fall, it’s business-planning season at Locations, and our annual goal board workshops are in full swing! A Locations tradition since the mid-2000s, goal boards (sometimes called vision boards) are an excellent way to keep your priorities for the year top of mind. In fact, the effectiveness of goal boards is actually backed by science. Celebrities like Oprah and Katy Perry have even used goal boards to envision some of their big moments!

What is a goal board, exactly?

A goal board is a collage of images, words and phrases that you put together to help you stay inspired and motivated. Think of it as a visual roadmap to what you’d like to accomplish—from closing more sales to carving out more time for hobbies or exercise.

Locations Realtor® and Partner Jeff Iwashita has made a goal board every year since he began his real estate career. Each year, he posts his new goal board in his bathroom, so he’s reminded daily of his priorities, like making time to catch some waves—and his aspirations, like winning an Aloha ‘Aina REALTOR® Award.

Can a goal board help me?

According to neuroscientist, medical doctor and executive coach Tara Swart, if used correctly, goal boards can help us manifest our dreams because, to our minds, there is little difference between a strongly imagined vision and an actual experience. Swart recommends placing your board somewhere you’ll see it often; as your brain gets used to seeing the same images over and over, you’ll be more likely to take steps toward achieving your goals. “The process reduces the [physiological] fear response to any new situation or person, making you more likely to take healthy risks, collaborate and embrace opportunity,” Swart explains.
