Atau Sakuma has more than 20 years of real estate experience, first in Seattle, and then here in Hawaii.
Atau joined Locations in 2007 and received the honorable mention Newcomer of the Year Award that same year. He received the Outstanding Achievement Award for doubling his production the following year, and was then awarded Locations’ Salesperson of the Year in 2009 and again in 2013. He was invited to be a Partner with Locations in 2015, and has been in his current role as a sales coach since January 2020.
Much of his success he attributes to mentorship and coaching. At the beginning of his career, he learned from a highly successful agent who taught him the foundations of an income-generating system and many of the skills, techniques and habits that he’s used throughout his career. When he came to Hawaii and signed on with Locations, he was fortunate to have long-time Partner Rod Mukai come up to him at the Holiday Luncheon, introduce himself and proceed to take him around the room. From there, Rod became a mentor and a coach in the truest sense of the word and proceeded to help shape him into a more well-rounded, balanced and effective agent and person.
Atau’s love of coaching began with coaching his children’s sports teams and Cub and Boy Scout troops for the last 17 years. There is a great deal of satisfaction in helping someone to develop skills and build on talents, while working together as a team to achieve something fun and amazing. His coaching philosophy is that real estate agents and their businesses are as unique and varied as the agents themselves, and to help the agent, the first step is to understand their needs and goals. Once he has an understanding of that, then he works to understand their business systems, roles and responsibilities in real estate and outside of it, as well as their daily and weekly work schedules. Ultimately, he wants to help you succeed in the business by “diagnosis then prescription,” based on his personal expertise and extensive training.
It’s a somewhat small sample size; however, in the last two years of full-time coaching, agents that he personally coached saw an average increase of 141% in number of units sold. He helped one of his agents with more than 10 years of real estate experience and a career average GCI of $60-80k in production to increase their GCI by 700%. He attributes the success that he’s seen with his agents to their dedication to their business and to a growth mindset and willingness to accept coaching.
Atau has five kids (four boys and one girl) and loves spending time with them as a coach and spectator for sports, music and dance. One of his favorite things is singing karaoke.
